For every system that has elements, there must be a harmonious co- existence among elements if the intended goals are to be achieved. This harmony can only be achieved when there are rules used. Rules are cocooned in a larger term called principle. Such being the case, graphic design has principles that govern its operations. Here are these principles which also form the basics of graphic design.
It deals with compactness of things. A close and cohesive relationship has to be created among the elements used in a particular design. Graphic design involves the stimulation of the mind using the eyes. That is why visual element of graphic design is key. When elements are seen is close proximity with one another, it become easier to manipulate the eye and as so is the mind.
This principle refers to recurrence of a task within the same piece of design. Repetition enables a design to visually stimulate the mind. You have to repeat the same element of design on one piece of design. For example you must repeat the same color, line or shape on one design to achieve your goal.
It involves distinguishing things by differentiating them. This can be done by using opposite elements of graphic design. For example a designer can creatively and cautiously use different color but not so different like purple and pink, red and orange. Another way is playing with the sizes of objects and shapes
This is the principle of making an aspect of graphic design to be outstanding. This can be achieved in different ways. For example, use of bold font. It is common for designers to use big objects and shapes strategically placed to achieve this effect. Color is another common way. You can use catch and bright colors to emphasize not to necessarily make the website beautiful.
